Best Exhaust Setup for Toyota GR Supra MK5 A90/A91: Sound, CEL, Downpipe, Valvetronic Exhaust, and Remote Control Guide

2026/07/03

In this article series, Fi EXHAUST shares recommended setup based on years of experience in the exhaust and performance modification industry. Each guide is created to help owners understand how each setup affects sound, drivability, CEL risk, and most importantly, how to choose the right setup for their build.

For the Toyota GR Supra MK5, the exhaust system should be chosen based on the owner’s goal. Some owners want a deeper B58 sound with a balanced daily-driving experience, while others are aiming for a high-performance build with ECU tuning.

Many Toyota GR Supra MK5 owners ask:

  • Is the catback exhaust enough to make the GR Supra B58 sound better?
  • Should I choose the Standard Version or the Ultimate Power Version?
  • What should OPF-equipped models pay attention to?
  • Will changing the exhaust or downpipe trigger a check engine light?
  • Why does the factory valve logic feel less user-friendly on some Supra models?

Our Recommendation Path for Toyota GR Supra MK5 A90/A91 Owners - Choose by Build Direction

If You Want the Best Daily Sound Upgrade: Choose Fi EXHAUST Standard Version Valvetronic Catback Exhaust System

For owners who want a deeper and fuller B58 tone without making the car too aggressive, the Fi EXHAUST Standard Version is the recommended starting point.

Even with the factory downpipe kept in place, the Standard Version catback system can already release more of the Supra’s signature inline-six sound. With the valves closed, the car remains comfortable for daily driving; with the valves open, the tone becomes deeper, louder, and more emotional.

For most street-driven Supra owners, this is the setup we would recommend first.

If You Are Building for Higher Power: Choose Fi EXHAUST Ultimate Power Version

For owners who are planning ECU tuning, higher boost, or turbo modifications, the Fi EXHAUST Ultimate Power Version is the recommended choice.

Compared with the Standard Version, the Ultimate Power Version uses larger piping throughout the system, creating a 24% increase in flow area. In previous Fi EXHAUST dyno testing, the Supra reached 464 whp with the Ultimate Power Version and BM3 Stage 2 calibration, compared with 328 whp in stock form on the same dyno.

While a larger diameter design can offer greater performance potential, it is not always the best choice for every Supra build. The ideal setup is the one that best matches the owner’s build goal.

OPF & CEL Notes

Catback Exhaust System

For catback-only upgrades, the Fi EXHAUST system for Non-OPF Supra model is designed as a plug-and-play setup without additional ECU tuning required. Fi EXHAUST also offers an OPF-compatible version.

However, for OPF models, ECU coding or programming toward a US-spec non-OPF configuration is recommended for owners who want a more complete long-term solution while restoring the aggressive factory-style pop and crackle character.

Downpipe Upgrade

For downpipe upgrades, Fi EXHAUST has extensive experience achieving no-CEL results across different Supra setups. However, CEL can still vary depending on the vehicle specification and overall setup.

Because of this, ECU tuning or programming is strongly recommended for owners who want the most complete long-term solution after modifying the downpipe.

Before choosing the final exhaust setup, we recommend confirming the vehicle’s specification with our regional representatives.

Taking Full Control of the Exhaust Valves

From real-world experience, the factory valve control on Supra models in certain markets can feel less intuitive for some owners. For example, even in Normal mode, the valves may only close after the car reaches a certain speed, which can become inconvenient in daily driving.

For this reason, we recommend pairing the exhaust system with the Fi PRO App Remote, allowing the driver to take full control of when the valves stay open or closed instead of relying only on the factory valve logic.
